My last ride with the Vitesse in October 2011 ended with a «kadong» on a short ride from Bergen to Aasane. It was such a “bad noise” that I did not check any further onsite and just called for Viking for a breakdown lorry to take the Vit back to my garage for a serious job during the winter. Immediately I expected it was the gearbox, however by just go underneath the car it was obviously the differential unit. A bit surprise as this was changed four years ago – in 2007. Anyway by looking at the bright side of it – it broke down at the end of the season J
Ready for the winter upgrades:
Fitting new differential unit
My last ride with the Vitesse in October 2011 ended with a «kadong» on a short ride from Bergen to Aasane. It was such a “bad noise” that I did not check any further on site and just called for Viking for a breakdown lorry for taking the Vit back to my garage for a serious job during the winter. Immediately I expected it was the gearbox, however by just go underneath the car it was obviously the differential unit. A bit surprise as this was changed four years ago – in 2007. In 2007 I did not do anything to ensure to get a high quality unit, I just ordere according to best price incl. P&P to Norway. This time I made a thread to get some proper advices where to have a quality unit: http://club.triumph.org.uk/cgi-bin/forum10/Blah.pl?m-1320485699/s-6/highlight-differential/#num6 . Several dealers where suggested, however – for convenience – Dave at Canley built a new one with new crown wheel and pinion. I’ve not provided any pictures as the work was done according to the standard workshop manual.
Upholstery of the rear seat
The seat of the rear seat is too soft to give any comfort - if that is possible at all J. I got in touch with a local “sadlemaker” that upholster and modify seats etc. for cars and boats etc. They put some foam underneath to make it a bit harder. Not much more to say other than the picture. The seat was somewhat more comfortable……
Fitting sub-woofer
There are some tiny speakers in the headrests of the MX5 seats, two for each seats. There is not much bass from these and a subwoofer was fitted. The main issue for me is that it should not be visual. After some search and careful measurements I found one that fitted back of the rear seat and underneath the soft top when folded. It fitted very well and improved the sound of my music J
Fitted very well :-) |

An extra metal plate was added together with the original fitting. Also note that there is some foam between the vertical reinforcement and the sub |
The provided fittings that come with the unit was used |
Remote volume/bass control underneath the dash |

Boot lid gas ram strut
A boot lid gas ram strut was fitted - available from TSSC. A convenient item and fitted within minutes. Satisfied, but the boot lid bends a bit, and when the lid is closed the bend continue due to the resistance in the gas strut, hence the left part of the lid easily touch the inner left rear wing area. Not a huge problem, but another strut should be fitted also to the right. However, the inner wing is not strong enough without modifications.
EU-kontoll (Norwegian MOT)
Flew through the Norwegian MOT - see here
...... and then ready for another great season :-)
